In 2023, I dove headfirst into a solo design-and-build project to turn a tiny footprint into something special—a studio space that could pull double duty as a creative zone and a cozy retreat. Inspired by clean, mid-century modern lines on the exterior, I wanted the outside to feel timeless and architectural. Inside, I leaned into an eclectic mix of textures, colors, and found pieces to give the space soul and personality. I obsessed over every inch, every material, every moment of light. The result? A space that’s not just functional, but kind of magical—way beyond what I imagined when I started with just a sketch and a vision.
120 sq. ft. studio design + build
For this DIY project, I designed and built a 10x12 fully finished studio, functioning as both a home office and a venue for future popup sales. The project involved several key steps:
Planning and Design: I began by sketching a layout that optimized space for both work and display areas. This included a dedicated workspace, and a flexible area for showcasing products for markets.
Framing and Construction: The structure was built using high-quality wood for the framework and spray-foam insulation. This ensured both durability and comfort, making the studio usable year-round, no matter the weather.
Electrical and Lighting: I hired an electrician to install electrical wiring to power lighting, devices, and other essentials. Task lighting was added to ensure a well-lit workspace, and ambient lighting was used for a pleasant environment during popup sales.
Interior Finishing: The walls were finished with drywall and 3/4 inch custom milled white oak that I repurposed from a past project. I also added flooring that is easy to clean and durable enough for both work and market setups.
Final Touches: The space was personalized with custom shelving, a work desk, and flexible display units that can be rearranged depending on the purpose of the day—whether it’s for professional work or a popup sale.
The final result is a functional, stylish, and adaptable studio that I designed and built from the ground up.
